Merco is proud to be recruiting on behalf of a respected neurological care provider for a fixed-term Ward Manager position based at a specialist neurorehabilitation centre in York.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced, values-led nurse to lead a dynamic, multidisciplinary team and play a key role in delivering exceptional care to adults with acquired brain injuries and complex neurological needs.
About the role
As Ward Manager, you’ll provide strong clinical leadership and operational oversight, ensuring a safe, effective, and person-centred environment. Working closely with clinicians, therapists, support staff, families and external professionals, you’ll coordinate care that supports service users in achieving their rehabilitation and recovery goals.
You will be a visible leader on the ward — mentoring your team, managing day-to-day operations, and driving continuous improvement in care standards and service delivery.
Key responsibilities:
- Provide clinical and operational leadership for the ward, including supervision, mentorship, and development of nursing staff.
- Lead on care planning, clinical audits, and regulatory compliance.
- Ensure robust admission and discharge planning alongside wider clinical teams.
- Promote a culture of dignity, respect, and empowerment for service users.
- Maintain high standards of record-keeping, medication management, and incident reporting.
- Support on-call responsibilities as part of a defined rota.
Requirements:
- Registered Nurse (RMN or RNLD) with current NMC registration.
- Proven experience in managing a ward or leading a nursing team in a healthcare or rehabilitation setting.
- Strong clinical skills and an understanding of neurological or complex care.
- Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team environment.
- Confident in decision-making, risk assessment and staff performance management.
- A calm, professional and solution-focused approach to leadership.
- Mentorship qualification or willingness to complete one.
